Kuala Lumpur, Wednesday, 5 January - On 6th December 2014, Hong Leong Group hosted its first ever Futsal Tournament involving its operating companies and ten children’s homes.
Participating companies under Hong Leong Group were required to adopt at least one home and train a team of 11 under-14 futsal players. Each company was required to have a mix of boys and girls in their teams. A total of eight operating companies participated: Malaysian Newsprint Industries Sdn Bhd; Guocera Holdings Sdn Bhd; Hong Leong Yamaha Motor Sdn Bhd; Guocoland (Malaysia) Berhad; Carsem (M) Sdn Bhd; Hong Leong Bank Berhad; Hong Leong Islamic Bank and Hong Leong Management Co Sdn Bhd. As part of the preparation, children from each home underwent futsal training with their respective coaches between the months of October and December 2014, with each phase of the training managed by the individual operating companies within the Hong Leong Group.
“The Hong Leong Futsal Tournament is part of our larger Group Joint CSR initiative towards building partnerships with civil society. It is imperative to move away from the redundant donor / donee relationship into an interactive partnership working towards much more effective solutions. Forming this first sporting alliance with the children from various homes, we hope, is the first step towards this,” said Ms Quek Sue Yian, Director of Hong Leong Foundation & Group Corporate Social Responsibility, who officiated at the event.

All team players were provided with complete soccer attire consisting of team jerseys, shoes, socks as well as other gear. They were also provided with complimentary insurance policy coverage from Hong Leong MSIG Takaful and received other collaterals and merchandise from Hong Leong Bank Berhad and Hong Leong Islamic Bank. Hong Leong Islamic Bank also opened up a savings account for all the children with a contribution of RM150 each.

The winning team took home a trophy while each player received a medal and RM350 each. Every home which participated also received RM7,000 contribution from Hong Leong Foundation through its Community Welfare Programme project.
