Hong Leong Foundation Organise Second
Record-Breaking "CHARITY RUN"
The Hong Leong Foundation today held its
second annual charity run and in doing so, broke their
own record of 40,000 participants set last year for
the country's Largest Charity Run Held.
This year the Hong Leong Foundation Charity
Run 2001 registered about 85,000 participants at the
close of their registration on 19 February. However,
the run actually recorded a crowd of about 100,000 due
to an overwhelming response from last minute registrants
at its various venues.
The organising chairman of the run, K
H Chia was presented with the Malaysia Book of Records
Certificate which was endorsed by the Minister of Domestic
Trade and Consumer Affairs, YB Tan Sri Dato' Hj Muhyiddin
Yassin who officiated at the Kuala Lumpur run held at
Dataran Merdeka.
Apart from Kuala Lumpur, the Hong Leong
Foundation Charity Run was also being held simultaneously
in 19 other venues across the country. The venues were
Penang, Sungai Petani, Ipoh, Sitiawan, Shah Alam, Seremban,
Nilai, Melaka, Muar, Kluang, Johor Bahru, Batu Pahat,
Pontian, Kuantan, Mentakab, Kuching, Miri, Kota Kinabalu
and Sandakan.
According to Roger Tan, Director of Hong
Leong Foundation, the increased in the number of venues
this year is testimony to the Malaysian public's willingness
to do their part for charity. "Last year," he said,
"the run was held in 11 venues and was a huge success.
This year, in anticipation of another
successful run, the number of venues was increased to
20. By doing so, we hope to make it easier for participants
to take part at a venue nearest and most convenient
to them so that as many people as possible can turn
up, be involved and do their part for charity." This
year, the Hong Leong Foundation has, again, pledged
to donate a total of RM1 million to charities throughout
the country. A total of 32 charities were identified
ranging from orphanages to shelters for abused children
to dialysis centers.
In Kuala Lumpur, the two charities were
the Shelter Home for Children and Persatuan Kebajikan
Ti-Ratana. Tan presented cheques amounting to RM40,000
each to James Nayagam, Chairman of Shelter Home and
Reverend Ratana, the founder of Persatuan Kebajikan
Ti-Ratana,
